Association for Information Management (ASLIB)

1. Introduction: The Association for Information Management (ASLIB) is a British association of special libraries and information centers founded in England in 1924 as Association of Special Libraries and Information Bureaux. In 1983, name of the Association was changed to “Association for Information Management”, but as the association is well known as ASLIB, its acronym retained. The tag line of the association is “Managing Information”. The ASLIB’s head office is in Bingley, UK.

2. Aim and Objectives: The aims and objectives of ASLIB are as follows
i) To facilitating the co-ordination and systemic use of sources of knowledge and information in all public affair and in industry and commerce and in all the arts and sciences.
ii) To increase the contribution of information to the economy, social and cultural life of community management.

3. Membership: The membership of ASLIB is largely composed of bodies including industrial and business organizations, profession and learned societies, public, academic and national libraries, publishers and database providers.

4. Activities: The main activities of ASLIB are discussed bellow

a) Conference and Seminars: Each Annual Conference of ASLIB takes up a specific theme for deliberations. Besides, ASLIB and its various specialist group regularly organize conference seminars and professionals meetings to discuss issues confronting the library and information specialists.

b) Training: ASLIB organize short term courses and training programmes for both members and non members.

c) Information Service: ASLIB through its outline information centre provide enquiry service concerning the availability of databases on specific subjects, coverage of data, search strategy and equipment and telecommunication.

d) Library: There are more than 30,000 volumes in the ASLIB library. Most of the books are related to Information Science and Documentation.

e) Publication: ASLIB Journal of Information Management, Journal of Documentation, Performance Measurement and Metrics, Library Hi Tech News : Incorporating Online and CD Notes, Program: Electronic Library & Information Systems are some of the very popular publications of ASLIB.

5. Conclusion: World War II introduced a new element into ASLIB’s affairs. In 1994 the first token grant of public funds given by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) started a fruitful partnership between ASLIB and the British Government which has played a significant part in ASLIB’s development ever since. The ASLIB microfilm service, set up in 1942, did much to alleviate allied difficulties caused by the wartime scarcity of foreign technical information. Perhaps, the ASLIB is dying at the backend as because as on 21st September, 2016 ASLIB website direct its user to Emerald Insight.
